This is a project created in 1992, managed by the Associação Norte Cultural and arisen from a will to decentralize national music culture. Settled in Amarante since 2001, this is a professional orchestra, with about 70 musicians, under the artistic direction of José Ferreira Lobo, and supported by the Ministry of Culture, through the Direcção-Geral das Artes.
Aware of the importance that diversification and the increase in artistic offer have in the country’s cultural development, Orquestra do Norte is nowadays the second major orchestra in Portugal with performance experience in opera. In its repertoire, the orchestra counts with several renowned concerts dedicated to the great works in Music History, from Baroque to Contemporary Music, giving special attention to Portuguese Music.
The Orchestra’s intense activity takes it to an average of seventy yearly performances around Portugal, though privileging the North region, and to occasionally holding concerts abroad, as it already did in Spain, France and Germany.
The orchestra was also a pioneer developer of a specific educational program in national territory, targeted at the youth, which took advantage of what benefits music brings for concentration, audition, abstraction, rhythmic coordination and fine motor skills.
In Amarante, Orchestra do Norte accorded with the local municipality to annually perform a number of educational concerts for students of the county’s schools. Between 2013 and 2016, up to 30 of these concerts took place, attended by a total of 5800 children, ranging from Kindergarten to Basic Education levels.
