Percussion Groups

There are different percussion groups in the Amarante municipality, but the ‘zés pereira’ take a prominent position within national context by their unique sonic characteristics and their very specific way of instrument building.

Bombos de Santo André

Group of percussion founded in Telões, in 1980, by Alcino Silva. The patron saint of the parish gave its name to the group “Bombos de Santo André”. The group performs in the national territory and also abroad.

Grupo de Bombos ‘Os Amigos da Borga’

The group Os Amigos da Borga was founded in 2005, in Lufrei.
In the meantime the group’s performances have been occurring in Portugal and also abroad.

Grupo de Santa Maria de Jazentes

One of Amarante’s oldest percussion groups is the Grupo de Santa Maria de Jazentes, formed in 1949, and currently integrating 50 elements.

It also includes an exclusively women group, the Rosas de Santa Maria do Jazente, which probably is the very first Portuguese feminine drum group.

Grupo de Bombos Unidos da Paródia

The Grupo de Bombos Unidos da Paródia was founded in 1974 and at that time counted with 4 drums (made by the group’s elements themselves), an accordion, a bagpipe and a flag.

Nowadays the group has 32 elements, aged between 12 and 75, and is equipped with the following instruments and elements: 8 drums, 8 snare drums, 5 bagpipes, 5 concertinas, a flag, 2 ‘gigantones’ and 3 ‘cabeçudos’.

On a yearly basis it participates in several festivities and performances all over Portugal and abroad (in France, Germany and Spain).

Grupo de Bombos Regional de S. Simão

The Grupo de Bombos Regional de S. Simão was founded by Alexandre da Silva, in 1935, and in the meantime the group’s performances have ranged Portugal and were also held abroad. Currently it is directed by Renato Silva, the founder’s grandson, maintaining the group as a family legacy.
