RUA

RUA – Urban Revitalisation of Amarante it is a revitalisation and regeneration project that aims to boost the center. The project was created by the Amarante Municipality, through InvestAmarante, together with the Associação Empresarial de Amarante and the Aventura Marão Clube, of the Casa da Juventude. It aims to generate new social and urban dynamics, changing and reducing paradigms of stagnation, through the revitalisation of the public space, the awareness of the urban renewal and building occupation and the regeneration and improvement of street trading. The main action fronts of the project are, the identification and management of hotspots of disturbance in the public space, the encouragement of public participation and responsible citizenship and the creation of a cultural and artistic program of urban revitalisation that is capable to promote outdoor activities and social gathering.

In 2017, RUA has already carried out some of its actions. Two actions, which by their nature have a strong connection to the application of Amarante City of Music to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, can be highlight.

Mimo a Minha Cidade

The action ‘Mimo a Minha Cidade’ was thought to promote the local trade in the city, especially during the MIMO Festival and the peak tourist season and the affluence of the emigrant community. This action of RUA was developed in synergy with the application of Amarante to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, since the inspirational theme was Amarante Creative City.

For the creative process of the narrative and illustrations were invited the writer Adélia Carvalho and the illustrators Anabela Dias and Diogo Cardoso. The narrative brings together key figures of the Amarante history, namely Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Teixeira de Pascoes, S. Gonçalo and the Trovador creator of the viola Amarantina. All them express a nostalgic feeling of absence, typical from the Portuguese culture, in which what is missed is the city of Amarante and its culture.

"Esplanada Comum" at Viola Amarantina Night

This action is related to an event that had its 2nd edition on 16th September 2017, showcasing one of the main traditional musical instruments of the city – viola Amarantina. Organized by the Associação Empresarial de Amarante, counting with performances of Propagode and d’O Arquinho Comércio Vivo. By building a terrace (Esplanada Comum) the RUA was capable to emphasise those community principles and showing that by working together it is possible to generate dynamics in the public space that fortify the city experience.
